Disney introduced integrating IoT technology into the guest experience nearly a decade ago. Maybe even making the world’s most magical place a little more magical. When vacationing we’ve grown accustomed to wristbands – Connected, or not. Royal Caribbean is providing contact tracing “Tracelets” to keep its cruise-goers safe from COVID.
In December 2020, Royal Caribbean deployed the trademarked hypoallergenic, water-resistant, comfortable Tracelets. Worn by all crew and guests, the software behind the wearable follows CDC guidelines for contact tracing and rapidly detects close contacts.
In fact, in February 2021, CDC turned to the cruise line for a look behind the curtain at the proprietary technology behind the contact tracing tool.
Today, Royal Caribbean and TraceSafe signed a two-year partnership, to create the contact tracing wearable.
Royal Caribbean Group Chief Product Innovation Officer, Jay Schneider, explained in a Royal Caribbean blog, “It was the willingness of the TraceSafe team to develop a custom Tracelet device that met our requirements for style and design that propelled the partnership forward.”
TraceSafe bands leverage a location-aware IoT platform, with scale to span the cruise line’s entire fleet.
The wearable opens the door to enhanced engagement and other guest experience opportunities. Development of the Tracelets started pre-pandemic, and when need arose it shifted course to support passenger safety, pausing the possibility of additional initiatives.
